Natural Health Options for Allergy Relief
By Julie Melville
Allergies are essentially an inappropriate response of the immune system to normally harmless matter. Seasonal allergies can be reactions to snow mold, dust and pollen, animal hair and feathers. Symptoms include watery, itchy eyes, sneezing, stuffy nose, headache, fatigue, and often depression.
Pharmacies plan for the season by lining their shelves with decongestants and antihistamines. But there are other sources of healing available, with fewer side affects. This season, why not try natural therapies instead?
Reduce symptoms by strengthening the immune system. Avoid caffeine, alcohol, sugar and nicotine. Eliminate congesting, allergenic food, including dairy products, eggs, wheat, yeasts, citrus fruits, peanuts, and soy products. Eat non-congesting fruits and vegetables, raw seeds and nuts, fish and poultry, and whole grains such as oats, millet and rice.
Good digestion rids the body of toxins, which add to allergen overload. Acidophilus and other probiotics support healthy digestive function. Flaxseed oil, also good for the digestive system, contains anti-inflammatory and anti-allergenic properties.
B-complex vitamins, especially B6 and pantothenic acid, support the adrenal glands, important in the control of allergies. They also assist in digestion and processing of amino acids. Echinacea and Goldenseal support the immune system and aid in liver detoxification. Magnesium relaxes the smooth muscle of the bronchial passages, making breathing easier.
Reflexology, a noninvasive therapy, will clear the sinuses, assist in lymph drainage and relax the entire body. Since it works to bring circulation to all organs, muscles and tissues, you will find that even after one treatment you sleep better, and your entire body feels less overloaded. Ask your therapist about the best program for you. Normally two treatments in the first week, followed by a weekly appointment during the allergy season, will be sufficient to ease the symptoms significantly.
If you suspect your allergies are a result of emotional concerns, consider Bach Flowers. These are dilute essences of plants, easy to use and gentle on the system. Typically, those with allergies will find Chicory, Gentian, Impatiens, or Larch helpful. Bach Flowers can be found at many health food stores. Read the pamphlets that describe the product to ensure you are choosing the most beneficial essence for you.
Consider an air purifier for your home. Talk to a practitioner about a spring cleanse prior to the onset of symptoms. Get out and exercise. With the use of these natural therapies, you can enjoy being outside again. There really is no need to suffer.
