Chiropractic Care - A Personal Experience
By Tina Sin
If you are unfamiliar with chiropractic care, then the thought of seeing a chiropractor, someone who "cracks your bones", may seem a bit scary. Until I actually saw one about three years ago, I was the one who feared chiropractors. I was amazed when I discovered all that chiropractic entails other than to "crack bones".
Chiropractic care contributes many benefits to your overall health and wellness. And the best thing about this practice is that it's completely drug-free. Your chiropractor should teach you about making the right choices for a healthy lifestyle whether it regards nutrition or physical activity.
During your first visit, your chiropractor will normally do a detailed examination of your spine. Some examinations may include an x-ray of your spine before they make a diagnosis and suggest treatment. The most common reasons someone seeks out a chiropractor are for back pain -- either chronic or occasional, neck pain or headaches.
The most common form of treatment is by way of "adjustments". Adjustments are also known as spinal manipulative therapy. This is a way to correct vertebral subluxation complex. Adjusting the spine helps your body rebuild itself, as your body is dependant on your spine. One slight adjustment to the spine can create relief in another part of your body, and not necessarily just for your back. It relaxes your body, creates a better balance and your entire nervous system begins to heal.
My chiropractor notes that having an aligned spine can help reduce the number of common colds I get every year. She also recalled an instance when one of her patients, nine months pregnant at the time, had trouble delivering. Upon the doctor's first diagnosis she realized that there was too much fluid built up in her spine. A week later, after three sessions and after her adjustments, she delivered a healthy baby.
My neck was a large issue. It always felt strained, and neck cramps happened at least once a month. My neck was growing in the opposite direction than it was supposed to, and I was amazed when my chiropractor told me she could correct it. I had three sessions a week, each session was no more than ten minutes, for the first two months. Now those are things of the past. It's a full time commitment at first, but I kept thinking about the end result -- no more neck spasms. After the first two months, my sessions were reduced to two a week for another month, than once a week for anther month, and then all the way down to just once a month.
As you continue your care you'll realize that you feel more energized, more relaxed and an overall sense of awareness of your own body stresses.
