Save Time and Money on Your Remodeling Project
By Craig Simoneau
So the time has come. The shag carpet in the foyer is so disgusting that even the dog doesn't dare walk on it, or maybe you're ready to update the kitchen with stainless steel and granite. No matter how big or small your remodeling dreams may be, the following tips will save you time and money so you can get on with your busy life.
Invest Your Time on the Front-End Spend time determining exactly what you want, when you want the job completed. Also, decide how much you are able to spend on the remodel. A clear plan is necessary, otherwise more time and money will be spent than is absolutely necessary.
Decide What You can do Yourself and What Must be Contracted Out You don't have to be a certified contractor to save time and money during a remodel. If are open to getting your hands dirty, consider saving projects such as demolition and painting for yourself. Not only will you feel a greater sense of accomplishment, your contractor's bill will be less as well.
Get the Best Value for Your Money Don't spend exorbitant amounts of money on over-priced items. Stick to your budget and when comparable alternatives to expense products exist then go with them. Also, don't go to the opposite extreme and buy low cost garbage. Keep in mind that a cheap remodel can actually hurt the value of your house. If you can’t afford to do the job the right way then wait until you can.
Keep Re-Sale in Mind The general rule-of-thumb for remodels is: keep re-sale value in mind when remodeling, unless you plan on living in the same house for at least six more years. If you're like most people, and your future plans are not definite, then don't go crazy. Lime green carpet may be your choice, but chances are potential buyers won't necessarily feel the same way. Call a Realtor! Most Realtors realize that you are potential future business and are more than willing to talk about how your upgrades will affect the value of your home.
Choose a Reputable Contractor The thorn in the side of any over-budget remodel that is behind schedule is a bad contractor. Getting written estimates from at least two contractors before you select one can easily prevent this. If you live in a major metropolitan area you may also be able to get other peoples' reviews of potential contractors from many online feedback sites.
Now that you know how to save yourself time and money in the remodeling process, all you have left is figure out what to do with all the money you've saved.
