Publisher's Letter

  April's issue is focused on food and the many ways it affects our lives. Food plays an important role in my life. I'm a cook at heart and enjoy whipping up a culinary delight for my family and friends whenever I get the chance. It's not only that we need food to sustain our bodies but the bigger aspect of how it brings people together. 

  Family mealtime represents a shared experience that my family has enjoyed for years. I love to cook with fresh ingredients and it usually takes me some time to prepare a meal. My family loves the process of helping in the kitchen whenever possible. Usually I start out by myself, gathering the ingredients, and notoriously someone walks by and pitches in. This is the time I usually get some one-on-one time with one of my children - it is a time to wind down and start to relax after a tough day at work or school. 

  Preparing the meal is one thing, but to actually sit down as a family is another. I have to admit that we don't sit down as a family every night. I wish we could, but our schedules just don't allow it and that's okay. When we can it is our time to share and discuss what is happening in our lives. As my children get older I can see that they cherish a family sit-down dinner as much as I do.

  The impact of food affects our lives in so many ways - it brings people together and also offers a special indulgence that can satisfy anyone's palate.
